Do you feel social media has a bad effect on mental health?

Post by Shortie » Sat Jan 21, 2023 12:03 am

Social Media has been around for quite a lot of years now with ones like Facebook and Twitter being around for over 10 years now. We have new ones such as TikTok that have become more popular over the last few years as well.

One thing I have noticed when it comes to social media is how people will post on social media what they want people to know about their lives but there is never anything regarding the bad luck in their life or the bad things that happen which leaves many who see the updates from people feeling depressed thinking that their life is not as good as they thought. Not to mention things like trolls and trouble causers on social media who try and make life difficult for people as well which can affect your mental health.

Do you feel social media has a bad effect on mental health and how bad do you think it is?

I think social media can greatly affect a person's mental health. Between seeing negative posts and people berating each other, it can definitely take a toll on your mental health. There's been times where I needed to take a break from social media to get in a better headspace.

Sometimes some parts of social media are downright toxic and full of hate, which can indeed affect your mental health. There's also the fact that people become too dependent on socializing on social media than real life and socializing in real life can often have a better effect on your mental health than socializing on the internet. Social media can also make people feel jealous when others post their successes or they wish to seek validation for their problems, which can affect your mental health in different ways.

Well, what I can say is that everything depends on how you're making use of social media platforms. If you're using them in a way that it can affect your mental health, then it's definitely capable of doing something like that. Avoid getting involved with toxicity online, this is going to help with your mental health online.

Yes, I believe social media can have a negative impact on mental health for some people. Excessive use, comparison, cyberbullying, and the constant need for validation can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. It's essential to use social media mindfully and seek support if it starts affecting your well-being.

Maybe it has, but I believe that it is not on me, because when I visit social networks, I just watch videos and nothing else. I never debate or argue with people. I never read comments, because if I just don't like the video, I skim it and continue watching without any reaction, and I think that's why I don't have any escape from social networks.

Social media can negatively impact mental health by fostering unrealistic comparisons, cyberbullying, and feelings of inadequacy or loneliness. Constant exposure to curated lives and negative content may lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. However, it also offers positive effects, such as social support and information sharing. Balancing usage and being mindful of content can mitigate adverse effects
