Humans are well known for their nasty ways and can often say something to someone that drags them down and makes them feel worthless. Of course, not everyone is like this but you will always get a small majority who do not care who they hurt and will say the most hurtful things to someone without thinking about what their actions could do to that person.
I myself have had many things said to me that was very upsetting, disheartening, and just not nice at all and from a young age I used to take these things personally and start to believe that what people were saying was true even if they weren't. This led to me getting low self-esteem and very low confidence which in turn affected my mood as well. It took me a while but I realized after speaking to people about my worries and concerns to take what someone says and just push it to the back of my mind and forget about it and not let it define the person I am. This took a lot of doing and what helped me the most was having positive people around me who used to ensure me that what I was thinking or what others said were not true, that I should look at what they said as jealousy rather than truth. The more I thought that way the better I got at pushing it to the back of my mind and the worrying what others thought of me got less and less.
